“Our gratitude runs deep, and our wish is that other families receive the same hope, kindness and support we have been blessed.”
In an interview with Phil Alexander, CEO of Cancer Fund for Children, he emphasised the vital emotional support the charity provides to families affected by childhood cancer.
Recognising the often-overlooked emotional toll on the entire family, the charity goes beyond medical care, offering essential resources to help families cope during their most challenging times.
Phil explains that while medical treatment is crucial, the charity focuses on the emotional well-being of families, recognising the strain a cancer diagnosis places on parents.
“When a child is diagnosed, parents are consumed with treatment and often neglect their own emotional needs,” he says. The fear of losing a child, combined with uncertainty, leads to anxiety and burnout.
Cancer Fund for Children alleviates some of this emotional burden by encouraging parents to participate in their complementary therapy services.
One family shared, “The experience was deeply healing, and the therapies gave us renewed hope and relief.”
These services provide essential relief for parents, allowing them to regain their emotional strength so they can continue supporting their diagnosed child and the entire family.
Parents face the challenge of balancing the need to protect other children in the family from worry, but also help them understand the situation. As Phil notes, “Children who are informed in an age-appropriate way are better equipped to cope.”
Cancer Fund for Children provides a safe space for siblings to express their emotions and process their feelings. Another family shared, “The release Cancer Fund for Children gave us was incredible,” highlighting the charity’s role in giving children the opportunity to discuss their emotions in a safe environment.
However, siblings also face isolation as their routines change, including missing school to protect their sick sibling or avoiding contact with extended family to reduce infection risk.
As Phil adds, “Siblings may feel resentment or frustration, as their needs are often overlooked.” This isolation, along with the long-term treatment, can increase feelings of loneliness, especially for primary caregivers.

To relieve these burdens, Cancer Fund for Children steps in to provide much-needed relief and social interaction for families. The charity’s visits become a welcome respite for many families.
During one visit, a charity worker had a heart-to-heart conversation with a sibling of a diagnosed child, allowing them to share emotions they may not feel comfortable discussing with a family member.
Siblings often carry a silent emotional burden, feeling isolated or unsure of how to communicate their feelings. In this safe, non-judgmental space, the sibling was able to open up, offering a vital release of pent-up emotions. This interaction highlights the charity's role in providing support for every family member.
Cancer Fund for Children also organises workshops, residential programs, and short breaks to help families find peer support and a sense of community. Another family shared, “It was the first time since the diagnosis that we felt like a family again, free from worries,” while another said, “It was like a village that wrapped us in their arms and kept us safe.”
Phil emphasises the importance of peer support, “We bring young people together to meet others who have gone through similar experiences.” This helps reduce isolation, fosters belonging, and strengthens families emotionally.
Cancer Fund for Children has made an incredible impact, offering support that reaches every family member. Their dedication has made the journey through childhood cancer a little easier, providing families with comfort, strength, and hope.
As one family expressed, “Our wish is that other families receive the same hope, kindness, and support we’ve been blessed with.”
Through their ongoing work, Cancer Fund for Children remains a vital source of hope and relief, helping families navigate the emotional challenges of childhood cancer.
